Service Learning in Adapted Physical Education: Connecting the Classroom to the Community

Abstract


The purpose of the study was to explore PETE undergraduate students’ perceptions and beliefs about working with children and adults with disabilities in two community-based settings. The undergraduate participants completed 20 hours of community service at two community-based sites as part of their Adapted Physical Education (APE) course requirements. The researchers identified five themes including: (a) social emotional climate, (b) prior preparation, (c) delivery of instruction, (d) career readiness, and (e) developing leadership.
